Average Value of an Alternating Current (AC)

Definition, Formula

The average value of an alternating current is defined as the DC current which transfers across any circuit the same charge is transfers by that alternating current during the same time.

AVERAGE VALUE

The average value of an alternating current is defined as the DC current which transfers across any circuit the same charge is transfers by that alternating current during the same time.

In case of symmetrical waveforms the average value taken over the complete cycle is zero. (Ex) sinusoidal waveform.

In case of unsymmetrical waveforms the average value must be taken for whole cycle. (Ex) Half wave rectified waveform.

If the time period is divided into a number of equal intervals N, then the current at each interval of time is given by i1,i2,.... iN and the average value is

 for symmetrical

 for unsymmetrical
