The electron-hole pairs are called thermally generated charge carriers. The number of these charge carriers is usually very small.

AND MINORITY CHARGE CARRIERS
The
electron-hole pairs are called thermally generated charge carriers. The number
of these charge carriers is usually very small. However an extrinsic
semiconductor has a larger number of charge carriers. For instance an N-type
semiconductor a large number of electrons. Besides this, N-type semiconductor
also contains fewer number of thermally generated holes. Since the number of
electrons, are much larger than the number of holes in a N-type semiconductor,
therefore electrons are called majority carriers and holes a minority carriers.
This is shown in fig.3.18.
