Introduction of Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT)

The BJT is a main building block of all modern electronic systems. It consists if two back to back P-N junctions manufactured in a single piece of a semiconductor crystal.

Introduction

The BJT is a main building block of all modern electronic systems. It consists if two back to back P-N junctions manufactured in a single piece of a semiconductor crystal. It has three-terminal. The BJT is used as a high speed electronic switch that is capable of switching between two operating states at a rate of several billions of times per second.

There are two types of transistors: Bipolar junction transistor and unipolar junction transistor. In the BJT current conduction is because of both the types of charge carriers, holes and electrons. Hence this is called as Bipolar junction transistor (BJT). In unipolar transistor the current conduction is only due to majority carriers.

The Bipolar junction transistors are two types. They are

(i) NPN transistor

(ii) PNP transistor.
